Cooltech Define vs Onda Pro, compared plainly: which treatment reduces fat cells, which one shrinks them, and how to pick the right one for your goal.
Two women come in with the same lower-tummy roll. One books fat freezing. The other books microwave slimming. Twelve weeks later both look great in the photos. A year on, the first woman still looks the same in the treated area even though her weight crept up a little — the fat cells that were removed are simply gone. The second woman gained a few kilos, the tummy came back.
Neither is a bad outcome. But they are different purchases, and almost nobody asks which one they are making. For transparency: OZ Aesthetic runs Cooltech Define and does not have an Onda Pro, so we will keep this to what is published and what clients report.
Reduction or shrinkage?
Fat freezing cools a pocket of fat until a portion of the fat cells can no longer recover. Over the following 8 to 12 weeks your body removes them away naturally, so the area has fewer fat cells than before — permanently.
Microwave slimming heats the fat instead. The cells release the fat they have stored and shrink, and the fibrous tissue around them softens.
Both make the area smaller. The difference is what comes after. Fat freezing removes the fat cells for good. Microwave leaves the fat cells in place, only emptier, so they can fill again if your weight goes up. It holds well when your weight holds steady.
What is Cooltech Define?
Cooltech Define is a medical-grade cryolipolysis system — fat freezing, or 冷冻溶脂 (lěng dòng róng zhī) — made by Cocoon Medical in Barcelona and now part of the Sinclair group. It does one job: reduce the number of fat cells in a defined pocket, safely and repeatably. It is not a three-in-one machine, and that focus is the point.
How it works
Fat cells are far more sensitive to cold than skin, nerve or muscle. A suction applicator draws the pocket into the handpiece and holds it at around −8°C for roughly 70 minutes. The cold triggers apoptosis — the same natural, controlled process your body already uses to retire old or damaged cells — and over the next two to three months your lymphatic system quietly clears the fat cells away.
Cooltech Define cools from 360° rather than through a single flat plate, so the full thickness of the drawn-in fat pad cools evenly. It also runs a suction test before treatment begins, and uses tagged gel pads that protect the skin barrier — making it a very safe treatment.
What one session gives you
Cryolipolysis is one of the most studied technologies in aesthetic medicine, so we can be specific rather than vague. A 2015 systematic review in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery pooled 19 studies and found reductions of 14.67% to 28.5% of the treated fat layer, measured by caliper. A single-session Cooltech study of 15 patients reported an average skin-fold reduction of about 19.6%, with the waist down 2.33 cm on average — from one session, with no meaningful change in body weight.
In our own measurements at OZ Aesthetic, well-selected clients commonly land in the 20% to 30% range for the treated pocket after a single cycle. One visit. That safe predictability is why we bought it.
What is Onda Pro, and how does Coolwaves work?
Onda is the body contouring platform from DEKA, the Italian medical device manufacturer, and Onda Pro is the current generation with a smaller applicator for under the chin. It is sold as three benefits in one: fat reduction, cellulite improvement and skin tightening.
The technology
Coolwaves emits microwaves at 2.45 GHz — the same frequency as your kitchen microwave, chosen for the same reason. At that frequency the energy is taken up by fat itself; DEKA’s figure is that around 80% reaches the fat layer. Warmed fat releases what it has stored, and the stiff fibrous bands that pull skin into cellulite dimples soften. Because the fat is heated directly, a chilled plate has to sit on your skin throughout to keep the surface comfortable.
What the results look like
Onda’s published results are reported in centimetres rather than percentages. An early group of 12 volunteers saw a median waist reduction of 3.90 cm after four sessions. A study of 19 patients reported a mean 3.8 cm at three months after three sessions. Work on the area under the chin has been published on 48 subjects.
So a realistic expectation is a few centimetres, built gradually over three to four sessions per area. That is a genuine result — simply a different shape of result from a single freezing cycle taking a fifth to a quarter out of one pocket.
Clients we assess who had microwave slimming elsewhere tend to say the area felt tighter almost immediately, which fits what heat does to collagen. The ones who kept the result are, almost without exception, the ones who kept their weight.
Two good outcomes, two different conditions
With fat freezing, the area is left with fewer fat cells, so the change is structural. If you gain weight afterwards the cells you still have will fill out and the area can look fuller again — but you are always working with a smaller reservoir than you started with, and nothing you do can undo the reduction.
With heat, the cells are still in place, emptied rather than removed. The result is just as visible, but it tracks your lifestyle: hold your weight and it holds, drift and it drifts. For someone whose eating and training are already stable, that is a perfectly good outcome and often the more comfortable route to it. It is the wrong purchase for someone hoping a machine will hold the line on their behalf.
It also has to be said that heat does things cold cannot touch. Freezing does nothing for the fibrous bands behind cellulite and nothing for collagen. If those are your concerns, fat freezing is not a better treatment — it is the wrong treatment.
The contact cooling question
To deliver microwaves safely, Onda presses a chilled plate against your skin for the whole session. But you cannot chill the surface without also chilling the layer immediately beneath it — and that layer is exactly where the skin-tightening part of the result is supposed to be generated. The cells that build new collagen need to be held in a warm window, not cooled from above.
The effect on the fat layer is not in dispute; the circumference data reflect it. The claim of treating three layers at once is fair to debate, and of Onda’s three marketed benefits the skin tightening is the least well supported. Whichever provider you see, it is worth asking how their device protects your skin surface without cooling the layer it is trying to stimulate.
How the two compare
Cryolipolysis has hundreds of published studies behind it, several systematic reviews and controlled trials, and for Cooltech Define specifically a 2023 dataset in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology covering 287 patients and 1,118 procedures — a scale of device-specific reporting few competing platforms can match.
Onda’s published work is smaller in scale — groups of 12, 19, 45 and 48 patients, without control groups, and often with co-authors employed by the manufacturer’s group. One detail matters if durability is your question: the only Onda study with a full year of follow-up was retracted on 10 January 2026, with the journal stating that the peer review had been insufficient and that it could not vouch for the study’s conclusions.

Cooltech Define before and after at OZ Aesthetic
Standardised lighting and positioning, measured at baseline and twelve weeks. Individual results vary.

So which one should you choose?
Match the technology to the concern, not to the marketing. If your goal is fat volume — a pinchable bulge on the lower tummy, flanks, inner thighs, arms, bra line or under the chin — fat freezing is the more predictable choice, and it is the one that leaves you with fewer fat cells rather than emptier ones.
If your concern is cellulite texture or mild skin laxity rather than volume, heat is the right family of treatment and cold has nothing to offer you. Microwave is one route; radiofrequency and HIFU-based tightening have their own well-established roles.
If you have both concerns, sequence them rather than compromising: take the volume out first, then treat the skin over it. Trying to buy both from a single device usually means accepting a diluted version of each.

Our approach at OZ Aesthetic Medspa
Every client is measured at baseline with calipers and a tape at marked points, then photographed in standardised positioning, and we repeat it at eight and twelve weeks. Change this gradual is difficult to judge in a mirror; numbers are not.
The suction test comes before the sale. If the tissue does not draw cleanly into the applicator, the fat is fibrous rather than pinchable, or the real issue is loose skin rather than volume, fat freezing is the wrong tool and we will say so at assessment. Matching the right applicator shape and suction level to your anatomy is the least glamorous and most decisive part of the whole treatment.
Cooltech Define and Onda Pro prices in Singapore (2026)
Fat freezing is priced per applicator cycle, and each area treated counts as one cycle. Across the Singapore market in 2026, cycles are commonly quoted between S$200 and S$900 depending on the system, the clinic and the applicator, with the abdomen often needing more than one applicator in a sitting. Trial pricing under S$100 exists and is normally a first-session promotion rather than a course rate.
Onda Pro is priced per session, commonly S$300 to S$600. The figure worth comparing is the course price rather than the session price, since the published protocols run three to four sessions per area. On that basis a microwave course frequently lands at or above the cost of a single freezing cycle.
What you are paying for is even cooling, the right applicator fit and someone willing to tell you when not to treat. Your price is confirmed at assessment.
So — what kind of result do you actually want?
Answer this one honestly and the rest of the decision makes itself.
- Fewer fat cells. You want the bulge structurally smaller and you want it to stay that way on its own. That is fat freezing — Cooltech Define.
- Better texture and tone. Volume is not the issue; dimpling and slack skin are. That is a heat-based pathway, chosen on its own merits.
- Both, properly sequenced. Volume first, skin second. That is a plan, not a package.

Frequently asked questions
Is Cooltech Define better than Onda Pro?
For fat volume, fat freezing is more predictable and usually achieves in one session what a microwave course achieves over three or four. For cellulite texture and mild laxity, heat has the advantage. They answer different questions.
Is fat freezing permanent?
The fat cells cleared from the area do not come back. The cells that remain can still enlarge if you gain weight, so results hold best with a steady weight — but you are always working with a smaller reservoir.
Does the fat come back after microwave slimming?
The cells are emptied rather than removed, so they can fill again if your calorie balance shifts. Clients with steady weight and habits keep their result well; the outcome is maintained by your lifestyle rather than being independent of it.
How much does one Cooltech Define session reduce?
Published cryolipolysis data show 14.67% to 28.5% reduction of the treated fat layer. In our own measurements, well-selected clients commonly sit in the 20% to 30% range for the treated pocket after one cycle.
Does it hurt, and is there downtime?
The first few minutes are intensely cold with a strong pulling sensation, then the area numbs and most clients work or read through the rest. Expect redness and temporary numbness afterwards. No downtime — back to work and the gym the same day.
Can fat freezing treat a double chin?
Yes, using a smaller applicator sized for under the chin. Results are assessed at twelve weeks.
Who is not suitable?
It is unsuitable in pregnancy and breastfeeding, in cold-related blood disorders, over a hernia in the treatment area, and for anyone whose real concern is loose skin rather than volume. Fibrous, non-pinchable fat responds poorly. We screen for all of this at assessment.
Is fat freezing a weight-loss treatment?
No. It is a contouring treatment for localised pockets in people already near their target weight. The scale generally will not move, which is why we measure fat thickness and circumference instead.
The bottom line
This is not a contest between a good machine and a bad one. It is a choice between two real outcomes with different conditions attached. Fat freezing leaves the area holding fewer fat cells, and that holds regardless of what you do next. Microwave empties fat cells, softens the tissue behind cellulite and warms the skin — valuable, and durable in people whose weight is steady, but measured so far in centimetres rather than percentages.
The most useful thing any provider can give you is an honest read on whether your problem is volume, texture or laxity. Come and be measured — you will leave knowing what a realistic result looks like in numbers.
Speaking of Microwave technology, find out why we believe this microwave treatment trumps it all.
